It is possible that Mn2+ acts as a regulatory signal in metabolism. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, a regulated enzyme of hepatic gluconeogenesis, is considered as a prototypic enzyme for which Mn2+ may act as a regulatory ion.
