Abstract
Thirty-six spinal-cord-injury (SCI) patients were examined with excretory urography and/or voiding cystourethrography as well as with ultrasound. Ultrasound is capable of circumventing problems in radiographic procedures that are common with SCI patients (e.g., overlying fecal material or bowel gas). In this study, ultrasound yielded significantly more diagnostic information than the radiographic procedures in 36% of the renal studies and 27% of the bladder studies. Real-time imaging of ureters was also investigated and is discussed. It is concluded that ultrasound should play a major role in the urologic evaluation of SCI patients.
