Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting 15-30% of children and 2-10% of adults (Bieber 2008). It is generally considered that patients with AD are prone to a variety of skin infections. This increased susceptibility is thought to be caused by an impaired skin barrier (making it easier for organisms to invade the skin and bind to cellular receptors), impaired innate and adaptive immunity, and defects in immunity resulting from treatment (eg, topical and systemic steroids and immunosuppressive agents) (Wollenberg et al. 2003a).
