The importance of executive deficits: Assessing the older patient's capacity to remain at home

Assessment of executive function may be useful when a patient's performance on cognitive screening tests seems incongruent with a demonstrated inability to manage personal care or to direct others to do so. In instances where the patient is alert and highly verbal but also exhibits signs of executive dysfunction that could compromise safe living, assisted living or nursing home care should be considered.
