Abstract

To the Editor: Mayeux et al. (Sept. 19 issue)¹ studied a “drug holiday” from levodopa in patients with Parkinson's disease who had been subjects in a study of serotonin metabolism during depression. They were not selected because of levodopa toxicity or long-term–levodopa syndrome. Forty-nine patients completed the drug holiday, but only 28 were compared with a control group “randomly” chosen from 200 patients with Parkinson's disease. The group on the drug holiday had a longer mean time before initiation of levodopa (3.1±5.4 years) than the control group (1.8±2.1 years). Also, the control group had been taking lower doses to begin.
