Abstract

Rheumatic diseases of the hip are painful conditions characterized by predominant inflammation and swelling in the hip joint and its associated muscles and ligaments. It is a debilitating condition that contributes to decline in function of an individual. As physicians who deal with musculoskeletal conditions, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of these disorders are vitally important. Fundamental to understanding rheumatologic conditions is knowledge of the joint and its components. The hip is a synovial joint (diarthrosis), consisting of two bony surfaces that articulate on each other, allowing for its characteristic mobility in multiple planes. In this chapter, we will discuss common rheumatologic hip conditions, their clinical presentation, physical exam findings, diagnosis and treatment options.
