Abstract

The author reviews the development of psychotherapeutic treatments for medically ill patients, including the rationales that underlie the various therapies. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of analytic psychotherapy and related treatments, and the more recent work with behavioral techniques, including biofeedback and relaxation therapy. The complex picture that emerges is a hopeful one, but points up the need for more carefully controlled comparison studies to establish which approaches are most useful for which particular patients.
