Abstract
Persistent vertigo can come about from a large number of diseases, ranging from pathology of the middle ear to life threatening disease of the central nervous system. The otologist is in a unique position to establish the correct diagnosis. He will find that as he takes care of these patients he will become involved with his colleagues in neurosurgery, neurology, and vascular diseases to a great extent. The otologist has special knowledge and diagnostic techniques at his command so that he may in many cases directly treat the patient and in other cases become the diagnostic part of a medical team that will be able to deliver optimal care to these patients. The otologist must function as a physician with a broad background of knowledge and highly developed diagnostic skills and therapeutic modalities.
