Abstract

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States, and annually, up to 230,000 people worldwide will die of PC. Approximately 43,000 will be diagnosed with PC in the United States this year, making it second only to colorectal cancer in tumors of gastrointestinal origin. The estimated overall 1-year survival rate is only 22 % with less than 5 % survival at 5 years-figures that underscore PC’s aggressive nature and the need for early detection. Surgical resection is the only potentially curative modality; however, even with advances in cross-sectional imaging and endoscopic diagnostics, only 15-20 % of patients will have resectable disease at presentation.
