Abstract

Open simple prostatectomy was long considered the gold-standard treatment for men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with large prostates (80 g or larger). With the development of less invasive endoscopic technology, the use of open simple prostatectomy has diminished significantly. In this chapter we review the history of open prostatectomy to understand how modern techniques were developed. The steps in the procedures are reviewed and clinical outcomes are discussed.
