Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is an important cause of numerous ocular disease processes. In addition to well-known conditions such as cataract and diabetic retinopathy (DR), ocular surface diseases are a common cause of discomfort and visual impairment. The number of people over the age of 50 in the United States suffering from dry eye disease is reported to be 3.2 million and 1.6 million, respectively.
