note = "Funding Information: The deeply entrenched position of the U.S. federal government regarding the “war on drugs” has no doubt influenced the irrational stance of NIDA in its refusal to support research on the medical benefits of marijuana. The government has consistently refused to acknowledge the dismal failure of that “war,” despite the massive evidence that has piled up over the years. Perhaps the first step should be to change the name of the NIH institute to NIDS—National Institute for Drug Studies—thereby legitimating the study of potential benefits, as well as harms, of marijuana and other drugs classified as Schedule I.",
