Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is a naturally occurring, nonessential metal that humans encounter through diet, industry, and natural health products. Hg has wide-reaching effects on the nervous system and is accepted as a neurotoxicant that promotes neurodegeneration and causes neurodevelopmental abnormalities. This chapter discusses sources of Hg exposure, metabolism and dietary interactions, and the biochemical mechanisms through which Hg interferes with neurological function and development.
