Abstract
Mercury is a naturally occurring metal with three distinct chemical forms: elemental, inorganic, and organic. Exposure to any form of mercury can be toxic, causing kidney dysfunction, cardiovascular abnormalities, respiratory distress, and lasting neurological impairment. Methylmercury in particular affects both the adult and developing nervous system. This entry reviews sources and routes of exposure, focusing on the health effects, predominantly neurological consequences, and the underlying mechanisms of mercury toxicity.
