Abstract
The elastance of the uterine cervix has been measured by a compliant latex balloon placed in the cervical canal. The slope of the pressure-volume characteristic of the balloon as it is filled with sterile water at 12 ml/min was found to differ for subjects with a history of mid or late pregnancy loss when compared with patients who had apparently normal pregnancies. Significant differences were also seen for patients with observed cervical pathology when compared with those subjects with apparently normal cervices.
