Abstract
Manganese is required for normal growth, development and cellular homeostasis. There are a range of manganesedependent enzyme families (e.g. oxidoreductases, transferases and hydrolases) and manganese metalloenzymes (e.g. arginase, glutamine synthetase and manganese superoxide dismutase). Manganese is required for normal immune function, the regulation of blood sugars and cellular energy, reproduction, digestion and bone growth, in defence mechanisms against free radicals and, in concert with vitamin K, to support blood clotting. An adequate intake of manganese for men and women is 2.3 and 1.8 mg per day, respectively. Tissue levels are stably maintained through a tight regulation of its absorption and excretion.
