Isoelectric focusing without ampholyte

We have studied the electrophoretic mobility of proteins in polyacrylamide gels when ampholyte and buffer were excluded from the system. We found, using a weak acid and base as anolyte and catholyte respectively, that a pH gradient was generated in the gel, and that proteins focused as sharp bands.
