Abstract

To the Editor: In the January 24 issue, Heath and his colleagues reported on the incidence, medical consequences, and economic impact of primary hyperparathyroidism. Unfortunately, hyperparathyroidism was proved by surgery in only 40 patients and by postmortem study in an additional six of a total of 90 patients. It could be that in at least some of the remaining 44 patients the diagnosis was wrong, particularly in those with mild hypercalcemia. Therefore, the patients who were not operated on should not have been included in Table 4, which related changing patterns of clinical characteristics. It is difficult to ascertain that.
