Abstract

Numerous excellent articles and reviews have been published within the last several years on developmental biology of the liver (1,2), on hepatic precursors found in bone marrow (3–6), and on oval cells and oval cell lines (7–10). In this review, we have focused on studies on normal hepatic stem-cell and liver lineage biology not covered by these prior reviews. The readers should refer to the prior reviews for summaries of the literature ignored here. Table 1 provides definitions of terms used throughout the review.
