Abstract
Older adults represent a large portion of the hospitalized population. Many older adults develop complications in the hospital that are not related to their admitting diagnosis. Normal physiologic changes that occur with aging can interact negatively with the typical hospital environment increasing risk for adverse events. These complications contribute to functional decline and loss of independence for older adults. This chapter describes risk factors for hospital-associated adverse events and preventive interventions.
