Gastrointestinal manifestations of fungal infections in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Article thirteen in the series

Although fungal infections of the gastrointestinal tract - with the exception of oral and esophageal candidiasis - remain a rare manifestation of AIDS, their morbidity and varied presentations make them an important consideration in presentations of gastrointestinal disease in AIDS. Our ability to diagnose these ailments rests mainly on biopsies and cultures obtained during endoscopy or surgery. Amphotericin B has been the standard of treatment, but the newer azole drugs are used increasingly to allow for easier and safer lifelong oral maintenance.
