Abstract
In this article we review the hormonal, infectious, structural, hematologic, and drug-associated causes of excessive uterine bleeding in adolescents. Starting with a review of normal menstrual cycles and menstrual physiology in a developmental context, we explain the mechanisms of hormonally mediated dysfunctional uterine bleeding, as well as discuss hematologic and structural causes of excessive bleeding relevant to the adolescent age group. There is also a detailed discussion of the evaluation of adolescent girls with excessive uterine bleeding and the management of these girls in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
