N2 - Agents that modify the synthesis or activity of leukotrienes have recently become available for the treatment of asthma. The effect of these agents on cough reflex sensitivity has not previously been investigated. A randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, crossover study was conducted in 12 healthy volunteers to evaluate the effect of zafirlukast, a leukotriene-receptor antagonist, on cough reflex sensitivity to inhaled capsaicin. The concentration of capsaicin inducing 2 or more and 5 or more coughs was not altered by a 14-day course of oral zafirlukast. The results of the present study, however, do not exclude a role for leukotriene-modifying agentS in the treatment of pathologic cough.
