Abstract
Transluminal coronary angioplasty has provided a model to demonstrate that collaterals decrease wall motion abnormalities, ST-segment change, and lactate production during ischemia. During acute myocardial infarction (MI), the collateral circulation limits infarct size. Although collaterals may decrease coronary artery bypass graft patency in certain patient subgroups, the perioperative infarct rate and mortality are decreased. Growth factors have been identified that increase collateral development and may improve ventricular function in the setting of MI.
