Abstract

Interest in dietary fiber has resurged in the last few decades because of potential beneficial effects for health. Fiber in different forms and amounts is widespread in foods, mainly of vegetable origin. The metabolic and therapeutic effects of fiber have prompted debate and research relating to its role in the prevention and treatment of disease. Recommendations on the optimum consumption of fiber in dietary form or as a drug supplement carry substantial economic implications in the health industry. Based on current evidence, a discussion follows on the role of dietary fiber pertinent to the health of older adults.
