Abstract

Colorectal disorders are frequent in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and usually manifest by diarrhea, which may be debilitating. Most colorectal disorders are caused by a wide range of bacterial, viral, and protozoan organisms. A systematic approach to the diagnostic evaluation of diarrhea in AIDS begins with stool studies and often includes endoscopic examination with mucosal biopsy. Directed therapy usually results in a better quality of life but, unfortunately, not a prolongation of life.
