Abstract
During the last years, a variety of biomarkers had been proposed to evaluate lead exposure, among them zinc-protoporphyrin (ZPP). ZPP determination is possible using a simple and low coat technique. However, there are still controversies among authors regarding its efficacy as a screening method due to its high sensitivity. However, its low specificity would be a problem when screening samples of children with other clinical conditions, like anemia. In the other hand, some authors still consider ZPP a value biomarker compared to blood lead levels when screening large exposed groups. It is also useful in the evaluation of workers with lead occupational exposure. This review assessed the efficacy of ZPP as a biological indicator in the lead exposure. Analysis of scientific studies developed so far has been used and their limitations and advantages are indicated. Moreover, aspects related to the analytical determination of ZPP have also been discussed, as much as information on lead kinetics and toxicodynamics.
