Abstract

Historically, severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) had been considered a mere surrogate for more advanced cardiovascular disease. It is in this context that transcatheter tricuspid valve interventions (TTVI) have emerged, with the first-in-human successful annuloplasty using the MitralignTM system reported in 2015 and the first cases of successful transcatheter edge-to-edge tricuspid valve repair (TTVR) using the MitraClipTM system in 2016. Currently, approximately two thirds of patients undergo TTVR using a clip device. Despite the rapid development of tricuspid valve repair techniques and promising early results, procedures and techniques are complex and in most cases reduce but less often completely abolish TR. Replacement technologies promise the hope to simplify the procedure and to increase efficacy. Patients currently referred for TTVI typically present with refractory symptoms of RV failure despite optimal medical treatment.
