Abstract
To the Editor: The association of hypomagnesemic states and cardiovascular disorders has been demonstrated by epidemiologic,1 histopathological2 and experimental3 studies. Minor but statistically significant reductions in serum magnesium have been shown in patients suffering from myocardial infarction during the acute and post-acute phase.4 It thus appears that magnesium deficiency constitutes a risk factor for coronary disease. In a recent issue of the Journal (N Engl J Med 296:862, 1977) Abraham et al. demonstrated once more a significant correlation between hypomagnesemia and coronary disease. Since myocardial damage is associated with a fall in the magnesium content of the infarcted muscle, a.
