Abstract
The excitation profiles of a number of Raman active bands of all-trans retinal have been measured in the visible region. These experimental results are compared to curves obtained from "A" and "B" terms arising in the theory of Raman spectra. The A term gives an excellent description of the data. Measurements of depolarization ratios are also in accord with these results. It appears then that knowledge of geometry change induced upon excitation will provide an adequate basis for interpreting Raman spectra of molecules related to the visual pigments.
