Abstract
Infection with HIV can lead to a chronic illness with some infected individuals known to have lived up to 7 years from the time of infection. It has been estimated that the median period from time of infection to onset of AIDS may be as long as 14 years. Just as a wide spectrum of physical illnesses can present during an individual's infection with HIV, so the psychiatric manifestations of HIV infection may present a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic issues to the clinician over the course of the illness.
