Abstract
Psychiatric ethics is a broad field encompassing the psychiatrist’s duties to patients, third parties, and communities. Core values in psychiatric ethics include autonomy, non-malfeasance, beneficence, justice, and respect for persons. Key issues include confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and boundary violations. More recently, duties to third parties have increased the ethical challenges faced by mental health professionals. The American Psychiatric Association’s Ethics Committee offers updated guidelines on challenging ethical subjects.
