Abstract
Perineuronal nets (PNN) are specialized structures surrounding certain nerve cells. Although considered as a part of the extracellular matrix (ECM), they are composed of sugars stemming from the cells they surround as well as of extracellular glycoproteins. PNN are formed after birth, through interactions of intrinsic genetic programs and experience-dependent activity. Their occurrence marks the end of heightened plasticity typical of early brain development and coincides with the maturation of memory circuits, especially with their capacity to retain memories over long periods of time. Manipulations of PNN are extensively researched for their potential to alleviate memory deficits of neuropsychiatric disorders.
