N2 - To the Editor: The report by Hack, Fanaroff, and Merkatz in the November 22 issue falls short of supplying all the data essential for the evaluation of neonatal mortality. The race of their patients is not mentioned in spite of known differences in survival of white and nonwhite neonates. In addition, there is no information about how many of the infants were born at the University Hospitals and how many were transferred from elsewhere. According to the American Hospital Association, approximately 2250 births occurred annually at the University Hospitals of Cleveland from 1973 to 1979.1 Therefore, if all newborns were.
