Abstract

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) is used to optimize postoperative neurological outcomes during surgery in which parts of the nervous system are at risk. It can be used to localize and identify parts of the nervous system and for continuous monitoring of the function and condition of parts of the nervous system. Techniques used for IONM include recording of spontaneous electroencephalogram and electromyogram activity, auditory evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials to transcranial or direct stimulation of the brain, and muscle and nerve responses to stimulation within the surgical field.
