Abstract

To the Editor: Congratulations to Wells et al. for their stimulating article, “Parathyroid Autotransplantation in Primary Parathyroid Hyperplasia” (N Engl J Med 295:57, 1976). They admit that their procedure of total parathyroid resection combined with autotransplantation of some parathyroid tissue to the patient's forearm must still be considered an “experimental” one. Dr. Cope's thoughtful editorial in the same issue makes a plea to beware of “too much surgery” and points out the established success of subtotal parathyroidectomy for patients with primary parathyroid hyperplasia. I agree with both Dr. Cope and Dr. Wells's group that the latter's combined procedure must.
