Laparoscopic resection of a gastric calcifying fibrous pseudotumor presenting with ulceration and hematemesis in a teenage patient: A case report and review of the literature

Overview: The increasing recognition of calcifying fibrous pseudotumor as a distinctive lesion coupled with the prospective study of its natural history has facilitated its current description as a rare, benign fibrous tumor that most frequently presents as a mass on the extremities of children and young adults. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in English literature of a calcifying fibrous pseudotumor of the stomach presenting as a symptomatic gastric ulcer in the teenage population. We report a case of a 17 year-old male who presented with a bleeding upper gastrointestinal ulceration heralded by hematemesis and melanotic stools. After stabilization of the patient and emergent endoscopic cauterization, the tumor was treated with laparoscopic resection in the form of partial gastrectomy. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical staining of the lesion verified the presence of calcifying fibrous pseudotumor. This unique case provides context to the potential clinical behavior of gastric CFP at a time when its natural history and pathogenesis are not fully understood. The number of gastric calcifying fibrous pseudotumor cases reported at this time is insufficient to establish formal guidelines for medical and surgical management; however, laparoscopic tumor resection appears to be a valid option.
