Abstract

Brain metastases are among the most common and feared complications of cancer. Over the past decades, advances in our understanding of cancer biology along with refinements of existing treatment modalities have begun to challenge therapeutic nihilism. Surgical resection and radiation remain mainstays of treatment, but debate exists over their appropriate use and timing. In addition to outlining the epidemiology, presentation, and work-up of the patient with brain metastases, this chapter explores these controversies and outlines a rational approach to management.
