Hiccup: A curious phenomenon, exasperating to patient and physician: A case report and review of literature on persistent hiccup lasting over two weeks in a 65 year old, necessitating hospitalization

A 65-year old man was admitted to our University hospital with a five-day history of hiccup, necessitating a second visit to the emergency room. Symptoms began after minor foot surgery for which anesthesia comprised of midazolam, fentanyl and propofol. Multiple drugs prescribed by the primary care physician provided no relief. Evaluation revealed duodenitis and vitamin B₁₂ deficiency. Hiccup persisted despite treatment in the hospital. After discharge several emergency room visits were followed by ultimate relief in two weeks. A discussion on the evaluation and management of the curious phenomenon follows.
