Abstract
A review of 128 myelomas was made in order to assess the incidence of hepatic involvement. A hepatic histological study was made in 21. The most common lesion was diffuse plasmocytic infiltration of the liver (10/21 cases) and, less frequently, meyloid metaplasia (4/21), amyloidosis (2/21), toxic hepatitis (2/21) and extrahepatic colostasis due to pancreatic infiltration (1 case). The clinical signs of hepatic involvement were more obvious in patients with a histologically documented infiltration, ranging from hepatomegalia to the presence of portal hypertension. We reached the conclusion that liver involvement in myelomas is more common than is generally thought.
