Abstract

The differentiation between the various low-grade lymphoproliferative neoplasms based only on morphology and immunohistochemistry using paraffin sections, is frequently difficult With the purpose of evaluate the contribution of flow cytometric (FC) immunophenotyping to this task, we studied 47 cases of low-grade B-cell lymphoid neoplasms. In all cases, we had formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue on which routine stains and immunostains were performed and immunophenotyping was done on fresh tissue by FC. We compared the histological diagnosis according to the REAL classification with the FC immunophenotype. In 91% of the cases, the morphological findings together with the results of FC, allowed us to characterize the lymphoid neoplasm. Immunophenotyping by FC is useful in the study of low grade lymphoid neoplasms and we think it is worthwhile to preserve routinely a piece of tissue for this technique.
