Abstract

The authors describe endotracheal lavage which is a simple, safe, and noninvasive technique to diagnose P. carinii pneumonia in 19 of 20 intubated patients with diffuse interstitial infiltrates on chest x-ray, who required mechanical ventilation, and who had a presumed diagnosis of AIDS.
