Abstract

The etiology of autism is not well understood, and most cases are of unknown etiology. Autism is most likely a multifactorial disease in which genetics and environmental factors combine to yield a wide range of phenotypes. As such, heterogeneity is a hallmark of both the origins and clinical manifestations of autism.
