Abstract
There is a complex interplay of aging, chronic illness, and functional and cognitive decline which lead to atypical presentations of common diseases in older adults. Atypical presentations may lead to an increase in morbidity, functional decline, and even mortality; this is often attributed to a delay in diagnosis. Atypical presentations lead to increased emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Those who work in the field of geriatrics are aware that older adults are more likely to present with atypical presentations, many of which are similar to geriatric syndromes. Older adults who have coronary artery disease are less likely to complain of the classic symptoms of substernal chest pain or pressure. It is estimated that up to two-thirds of older adults present instead with atypical symptoms of urinary tract infections. Older adults with pneumonia are also more likely to present with atypical symptoms, have more severe symptoms, and have higher mortality compared with younger adults.
