Abstract

Estimates of co-occurring substance abuse in patients with chronic pain and opioid use disorder vary between 3 and 48% based on the population studied and the definition of opioid use disorder. This chapter reviews the abuse patterns of the various substances abused by patients with chronic pain and comorbid opioid dependence and explores the interaction of specific substances with opioids. Rationale for the need to assess and treat for specific substances of abuse is discussed based on current literature and approach to assessment and treatment of these comorbid substances is also discussed.
