Because of the need to provide efficient and cost-effective health care to hospitalized patients, a new breed of inpatient specialists termed hospitalists has grown in number since the 1980s. One group that may especially benefit from the improved quality and efficiency of medical care that hospitalists strive to provide is the elderly nursing home population. The authors present details of the program that they have initiated in their nursing home.
